Moot Court Competition 2025

Apex School of Law, Apex University, Jaipur, organized the 2nd Dr. S.M. Juniwal Ranka International Moot Court Competition 2025 from 16th to 18th March 2025. The purpose behind organizing such a Moot Court Competition is to provide a platform where young law students can showcase their advocacy skills in a real court like environment. The competition commenced with a grand inaugural ceremony where Honorable Mr. Justice G.S. Singhvi was the Chief Guest of the event, and Honorable Mr. Justice M.N. Bhandari was the Guest of Honor. Also present were Justice Rajendra Mishra and Dr. Rajesh Bahuguna, Pro-VC and Dean, School of Law, Uttarakhand University, Dehradun, as Special Guests.

The competition was conducted under the guidance of Justice J.K. Ranka, Vice Chairman of Ranka Charitable Trust. More than 32 teams from around the globe participated in the event. On day 1, both preliminary rounds were conducted and judged by two eminent law scholars, advocates, and legal academicians.

On day 2, Quarter Final Rounds were conducted, where the top 8 teams competed to qualify for the Semi-Final Rounds. The four semi-finalists, with their extraordinary arguments and advocacy, competed to qualify for the final rounds before a panel consisting of Senior Advocates and Deans of Reputed Universities.
Day 2 also featured a Cultural Night, including a Ramp Walk, DJ night, and various performances, followed by a gala dinner.

Day 3 commenced with the Final Rounds, judged by Chandrakanta Gupta (Retd. DJ), Advocate Mahendra Shandilya, Advocate Ram Chandra Sharma, Prof. (Dr.) Aradhna Parmar, and Prof. (Dr.) Richa Chaudhary. The Moot Court Competition concluded with a grand valedictory ceremony, where Honorable Mr. Justice Anoop Kumar Dand and Honorable Mr. Justice Ashok Kumar Jain were the Chief Guests, and Honorable Mr. Justice Rajendra Mishra was the Guest of Honor. Advocate Prahlad Sharma was also a Special Guest, alongside other guests, including Advocate Madhav Dadhich from the Supreme Court of India, the person who drafted the moot proposition, and Advocates Anurag and Sushil Daga from Amicus Legal, who acted as Legal Networking Partners. Winners were announced by Honorable Chairman Dr. Ravi Juniwal during the valedictory ceremony. UFYLC, Rajasthan University, was declared the winner of the competition and was awarded Rs. 21,000 and a 1-year subscription to EBC Learning. The 1st Runner-Up was GNLU, Gandhinagar, awarded Rs. 11,000 and a 6-year subscription to EBC Learning. The Best Speaker award was presented to Dishika Jand from GNLU, Gandhinagar, who received Rs. 2,100 and a trophy. The Best Memorial award was given to UFYLC, Rajasthan University, and Mody University of Science and Technology.
The competition was organized in collaboration with Ranka Charitable Trust and SCC Online, with EBC as a Knowledge Partner and Amicus Legal as a Legal Networking Partner. Both the valedictory and inaugural ceremonies included question-answer rounds, where participants and various other students from Apex University asked questions related to legal research and legal careers.
The advisory committee for organizing this competition comprised various eminent academicians and legal professionals, including Dr. Sanjula Thanvi, Dr. G.S. Rajpurohit, Dr. Richa Chaudhary, Miss Rakhi Sharma, Mr. Prabhpreet Singh, Dr. Bhupesh Rathore, and Prof. (Dr.) Mariea Safta from Titu Maiorescu University, Romania.

ABOUT THE APEX SCHOOL OF LAW

Apex School of Law, Apex University, Jaipur is a realization of dreams of the great visionary late Dr. S. M. Juniwal. ABOUT JAIPUR

ABOUT RANKA PUBLIC CHARITABLE TRUST

The Trust was set up by Late Dr. N. M. Ranka, Senior Advocate in the year 1980. Major activities undertaken by the Trust are as follows:

SUBMISSION OF MEMORIALS

ELIGIBILITY

  • The competition shall be open to students who are pursuing an integrated 5-year LL.B. program or pursuing a 3-year LL.B. program from recognized University/Institution approved by Bar Council of India.
  • Each team shall consist of 3 members, (two ‘Speakers’ and one ‘Researcher’) or 2 members (two ‘Speakers’ and out of these two, one speaker has to be designated as a researcher as well). Maximum of 3 members and minimum of 2 members in a team are allowed.
  • Only one team from any College/Law School/Institution is allowed to participate in the Competition.
  • No additional member or team coach is allowed to accompany the team.

ACCOMMODATION

  • The organizers will provide boarding and lodging facilities from any misconduct at the venue or the place of accommodation shall result in disqualification of the team from the accommodation.

AWARDS

  • Winning Team Award: The winning team will get a trophy and certificate of appreciation with a cash prize of Rs. 31,000/- with 1year Subscription of SCC Learning
  • Runners-Up Award: The runners-up will get a trophy and certificate of appreciation with a cash prize of Rs. 21,000/-
  • Best Speaker: Best Student speaker will get a trophy and certificate of appreciation with a cash prize of Rs. 5100/-
  • Best Memorial: Best Memorial will get a trophy and certificate of appreciation with a cash prize of Rs. 11,000/-
  • Best Researcher: Best Researcher will get a trophy and certificate of appreciation with a cash prize of Rs. 5100/-
  • Certificates of participation shall be given to all the participants.
  • The participation certificates will not be provided to any participant who is not present at the Prize Distribution Ceremony and the same shall not be sent by post/courier to participants under any circumstances.

COMPETITION ROUNDS

There shall be two preliminary rounds, quarter finals, semifinals and a final round spreading over a period of 3 days.

PRELIMINARY ROUNDS

  • There shall be two Preliminary rounds. In the two Preliminary Rounds, the Participating teams shall argue for both the sides. The team which argues from one side in the first preliminary Round shall argue from another in the second Preliminary Round.
  • The pairing of teams for the Preliminary Rounds shall be done by a draw of lots by the competition Organization Committee. No two teams shall argue against each other more than once in the Preliminary Rounds.
  • Each Team will be given the opposing team’s Memorials after the draw of lots. No team shall be provided any information regarding the identity of the opposing teams or any other team participating in the Competition.
  • The selection of the top 8 teams for Quarter-Final Rounds shall be based on the following criteria:
  • The selection of the top 8 teams for the Quarter Final Rounds shall be based on the total number of wins as well as the ‘total scores’ of teams after the conclusion of both the Preliminary rounds.
    • First, the team with the higher total score after the two preliminary rounds shall be ranked higher. While deciding the Quarter finalists, the wins secured by teams in both rounds will also be taken into consideration along with the scores, such that, the team with 2 wins in the preliminary rounds will be ranked higher than the team with a single win.
    • Second, for teams that have the same total round score and wins in the preliminary rounds, the team with the higher aggregate absolute speaker scores shall be ranked higher.
    • Lastly, if two teams have the same total round score, same wins, and the same aggregate absolute speaker scores in the preliminary rounds, then the team with the higher memorial scores shall be ranked high.

QUARTER FINALS

  • In the Quarter-Final, each Participating Team shall be assigned to argue for one side, i.e., each team shall argue only once against the team determined by and for the side decided by a draw of lots.
  • Each Team will be given the opposing team’s Memorials after the draw of lots.
  • No team shall be provided any information regarding the identity of the opposing teams or any other team participating in the Competition.
  • It shall be a knockout round. The winner of each round shall move to the semifinal. Four (4) teams shall move to semi-finals.
  • In case of a tie between teams in the quarterfinals, the aggregate total of the marks of memorials (appellant and respondent) of the teams shall be counted. The team with the highest marks moves ahead.

SEMI FINALS/FINAL

  • The selection of 4 teams for the Semi-Final Round and of 2 teams for the Final Round shall be on a ‘knock-out’ basis.
  • Four (4) teams shall compete in semifinals. It shall be a knockout round. The winner of each semifinal round shall move to the Final round.
  • The criteria of marking in this round are the aggregate total of the marks of both the speakers.
  • In case of a tie between teams in the semifinals, the aggregate total of the marks of memorials (appellant and respondent) of the teams shall be counted. The team with the highest marks moves ahead.
  • There shall be one (1) FINAL ROUND. The marking criteria in the Final Round is the same as that of semi-finals.
